Characters
Scene 1

  1. Roderigo- A Venetian gentleman in love with Desdemona.  In this scene, Roderigo and Iago, Othello’s ensigh, decide to stir up trouble with Desdemona’s father hoping that his anger and rage will ruin Othello and Desdemona’s marriage.
  2. Iago- Othello’s ensign (standard-bearer).  Iago is jealous Cassio was appointed lieutenant and he was not.  Out of revenge, he conspires with Roderigo to upset Brantantio about Desdemona’s marriage to Othello in an attempt to hurt Othello.
  3. Brabantio- A Venetian Senator and Desdemona’s father.  He becomes upset with the relationship between his daughter and Othello due to Roderigo and Iago and is a very passionate man.

Scene 2

  1. Iago- While with Othello, Iago pretends to be dutiful and a loyal supporter of Othello and warns Othello that Brabantio will want to breakup his marriage with Desdemona.
  2. Roderigo- In this scene, Roderigo enters just in time to witness the confrontation between Brabantio and Othello. 
  3. Brabantio- abuses Othello and physically threatens him and accuses him of enchanting Desdemona with bad magic and drugs
  1. Othello – A black army general in the service of the Duke of Venice. Othello is married to Desdemona and remains very calm while being verbally abused by Brabantio.
  2. Cassio- Othello’s new appointed lieutenant.  Arrives on an urgent message from the duke to find Othello.  He reports that war is imminent and that the senate needs Othello urgently.

Scene 3

  1. Brabantio- publicly accuses Othello of abducting and seducing Desdemona. Accuses Othello of drugging Desdemona.
  2. Othello- sends for Desdemona so she can share her side of the story. 
  3. Desdemona- Othello’s wife, daughter of Brabantio. Defends Othello.

All that is above can just be a hypterlink but I am not sure if it is necessary.

Iago
Act 1 scene 1 line 18-20
-shows first signs of jealousy as he was not awarded lieutenent
Act 1 scene 1 line 32-33
-relates to jealousy theme. Iago is bitter about Cassio being appointed rather than him.
Act 1 scene 1 43-44
-foreshadowing to struggle for power and control.  Hints that Iago will not be following Othello
Act 1 Scene 1 68
-stirring up trouble. Evoking pathos from Brabantio. Relates to struggle for power and possession and control theme.
Act 1 Scene 1 lines 88
-very passionate. Very dramatic.
Act 1 Scene 3
-Iago is very ambitious and falsely advising Roderigo.  ‘put thy money……”               

Roderigo
1:1:75
-purposely stirring up trouble.
1:1:108 ‘in simple and pure soul I come to you’
-very manipulative and deceiving. Obvious he comes without simple and pure motives. Very selfish

 

 

Brabantio
1:1:138
-obviously riled up by Iago and Roderigo.  He is now passionate and irrational and will continue to yell and accuse Othello of tricking Desdemona into marriage.
Forshadowing- ‘she has deceived her father and may thee. 1:3:289.

Doesn’t know his daughter but is so caught up in passion and rage he will defend it anyway. 1:3:94-98

Desdemona
Respectful of men

Othello
Very calm and collected. 1:2:17-19

Very loving 1:2:25-27

Does not seek trouble. 1:2:30

88-91. overall calm and collected and not rude

honest and ready to prove the truth. He calm and rational and not letting his emotions get the best of him. 114-119
